Ann Kozeliski - Sumi-e

Sumi-e is the most wondrous form of artistic expression I have yet to discover. The study of sumi-e has made me a better artist.

As a national award-winning professional graphic designer for over twenty years, the beauty, simplicity and meditative quality of sumi-e has developed my eye, strengthened my stroke and focused my energy. Sumi-e has provided a fine art outlet that was missing in my life, completing the circle.

Sumi-e means "Ink Painting" and is done in strong solid black ink made from soot and glue as well as color.

The spontaneous style of Sumi-e in which I prefer to work, compresses the energy of the subject into a powerful simple statement, just as a Haiku captures a moment in a limited amount of syllables.
