Leslie Jean Wentzell - Pottery
My art has always been influenced by nature. I find inspiration in the textures of driftwood, shapes of leaves, colors of sunsets, movement of waves and interwoven pattern of land meeting sea. Sometimes the inspiration is translated literally in my work. At other times it becomes abstracted.
As a formalist, my work
is strongly linear. Strong curving lines provide a sense of fluid movement - a perception
that stands in direct contrast to the hard and static vitrified clay.
A sculptor at heart, it is my goal to give form and make tangible the sense of awe in the beauty of the world around us.
My ceramics are mostly hand-built, occasionally incorporating wheel-thrown components. I often use a dark brown or terracotta clay, leaving parts of it unglazed. The warm earthy colors influence every glaze.
